By the rich and ‘Rockefellers’ I’ll assume that you’re talking about capitalists - who else? For the sake of argument I’ll use call them Republicans since that would be the general depiction of a Repubican.
The fact is that the Republicans are the ones who defend the rights and freedoms that this country was founded on. They’re supporters of free markets, the Constitution, against regulation and central planning - all things Democrats support.
When Democrats come up with things like regulation, in this case of rent control, they cause the devaluation of these rental properties. If the owner whether he be black white or whatever can’t get enough rent income to support the mortgage for the structure it will default. When it defaults it brings down the value of that building and all of those around it. The lack of sufficient income for the owner will also make it impossible for him or her to improve structure improvements making it more luxurious. This regulation that is sold to the public by the Democrats as a way to ‘make affordable housing’ actually ends up taking away from the very people it was supposed to help. This is one of the reasons that poor neighborhoods remains poor.
The Democrats sell themselves as being there for the ‘little’ person but do more to hurt them while at the same time taking away your rights - keeping the poor poor.

Some of my fondest childhood moments are from 1520 Sedwick Avenue. My mom and I used to picnic down on the sidewalk among the broken glass bottles and count the pigeon-shit stains on all the window sills and imagine what it was like back in ‘73. It must have been a really special place. We would go there to learn about ourselves and our history and take pride in all of the influential people who made something of themselves and bettered our community as a result of the renaissance of high culture and self-betterment that was the late seventies and early eighties in the majestic South Bronx. Where would we be without cultural icons like Ja Rule, Nelly and 50 Cent to show us the better side of our nature and inspire us to bring ourselves out of poverty and despair? If it weren’t for songs like “Get your eagle on” or “Every little thing that we do,” I don’t think I would have made it through medical school and three PhD programs. It’s some inspiring shit!
Who cares if a large volume of the artistic expression that came from that wellspring is merely a way to express and encourage the very base and antisocial ethic that society has tagged us with? Who cares if the art form has done little recently but confirm the minstrelsy and savagery that racists expect us to exhibit? It got us on TV, so we may as well celebrate it, right? We all know we’ve heard or seen an instance where some bitch got pregnant on purpose to get that support from the state and where she refused to even try and get a job because if she made money the state would take away her ‘benefits’. How about poor people who are on assistance like welfare or Medicare; think they can afford to get a job? Fuck no. If they go get a job they’ll lose their welfare and their Medicare - that’s how these programs keep the poor down. These programs are paid for by the exponential taxation system in the country that penalizes you more and more the more you earn - the rich. The Rockefellers want to pay higher taxes just to keep the poor person down? This inequality is due to the loss of freedoms in this country as a result from socialists.
As for rate of pay, well, I get paid shit too. I’ve made a lot more but it was doing work that was a hell of a lot grimier. There’s a going rate for every job.

I do internet content providing right now, in Minnesota it doesn’t pay a lot unless I want to drive into the city. I really don’t want to spend two hours a day driving so I chose not to make the money. That line of work also pays a hell of a lot more in say, Seattle or California. I’m sure there are millionaire janitors in those places that work for Google and Microsoft. Geographics also play a large part of the going rate or equalization of pay.

Yo white guy, let’s slow this down for a little. You’re calling Darrow’s speech “Marxist bullshit.” Now, Marx’s system is foolish and unworkable, but the actual critique of capitalism is incisive and pretty dead on. Have you ever read Capital? He identifies a lot of problems with the capitalist system. The free-market system is only “perfect” within its own modeling, which is based on really reductionist assumptions that ignore a lot of aspects of human life. A lot of economists assume that because these things can’t be modeled economically, it’s best not to worry about them - but that ultimately gets you into potentially a really low quality of life because there’s nothing to ensure basic positive liberties in the free market model. What Marx does in Capital is point out where the capitalist model fails many of its participants.
But anyway, even if you believe in the free market, Darrow is talking about a lot of government corruption or business monopolies, both situations where you don’t have competitive markets, and people are therefore screwed over. These are real situations that occurred then and now and allow rich people to get a huge economic surplus at the expense of the people in general: this is already a deadweight loss in free market economics, but what Darrow is pointing out is that there are also external costs - people can’t afford everything they need to live, so they need to use crime. When people are pushed below the poverty line, things a lot worse than simple economic loss happen that no system accounts for: it’s like a state change in science.
Now, there’s a lot of responses to this problem. You can use scapegoating and demagoguery, like Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler. You can use the free market, like Milton Friedman, who believes the reason the system doesn’t work is because it’s never been allowed to work freely. There’s smart liberalism, like FDR, who got the country out of the depression. I’d count LBJ’s war on poverty in this category. Then you can use dumb liberalism, like a lot of the things Congress is doing, some things like farm subsidies that just fuck it up for everyone. But you gotta see that Republicans, not true conservatives like George Will but the Republicans in power like George W. Bush, do even worse, by giving breaks, subsidies, etc., to large corporations and rich investors, sometimes in markets dominated by so few industries that it’s essentially a trust/cartel (and there’s no competition). And that a) fucks up the free market in general and b) specifically fucks over people who aren’t rich.
Also, man, you say that Republicans are the party that defends freedom. Really, man? This current set of them? Stopping stem cell research, needle exchange, condom programs? The fucking Patriot Act, wiretapping, torture, illegal seizures? Excessive copyright laws, blocking Canadian medicine, continuing the war on drugs? This is a set of big-government Republicans in office right now.
Finally, the stock market? Maybe. But that’s more of a gamble than people often think. There’s cyclical crashes and breakdowns in the stock market that even highly skilled investors lose fortunes to. You should read the Black Swan by Nassim Taleb. The normal amount of “risk” in the stock market doesn’t always take these into account. So you can win for years, but you’re sort of playing Russian Roulette. If you don’t have a lot of training in the stock market, it’s even worse, because you can lose even when shit’s going well. Unless you have a lot of time to follow stocks well, it’s not worth getting too much of your capital involved.

When you get some money, you feel good. Then you look up and see what the people who have more than you have and so you strive to get more. When you get to their level you find there is another level of money out there to give you more decadent things. Alright so let’s say you get to that level. That level is pretty nice. Personal jets, expensive cars, and penthouses in top cities around the world. OK cool. Then you learn that after a while it doesn’t mean anything about money anymore. You have so much it doesn’t make a diference one way or another, so it becomes power. You want more power and it feels good to have power. So you keep wanting more and wanting more. Then as you keep getting it you find you’ll do anything you can to get more. Then all of a sudden you are doin some fucked up shit just to get that power. Yet you don’t realize there are people underneath you now that are hurtin really bad from it.
Then it comes back to what I said before. Republican or Democrat, Capitalism or Communism. It doesn’t matter all sides and systems are good in theory. The problem is the human aspect of those systems. There is always going to be some bitch made piece of shit that’s going to abuse it.

I haven’t read Das Captial or the Communist Manifesto - I have no interest in it because I know it’s incorrect, I know his points from other books and have seen all of his theories proven incorrect. This still doesn’t change the fact that those who believe the world is out to get them will hail his work as bible.
With what parts I read about what Darrow was saying he was complaining a lot about the prices of this and that claiming it all to be fixed. I’m not saying things aren’t fixed, but the only things that are fixed are done by the government through regulation and we know how well regulation works IE Nixon’s debacle in the ’70s. As far as paying ‘too much’ for commodoties it’s all out there in the free exchanges. Everything has a price set by the markets; what people are willing to pay for it based on conditions. I usually hear this the most about oil and gas from unsophisticated blue collar people who blame the corporations and their supposed power. The only ones fixing the price of oil is OPEC through their power of control of the supply. Exxon has no control and they actually get hurt when oil is this high and gasoline still trades at the same low level; the ‘crack spread’. Also, these companies aren’t forcing ANYBODY to buy their product. If you happen to be dependant on their product it’s because you have the wealth of being to own these things, a house, a car whatever, that requires the gas, the oil or the electricity. If you want to go back to the 1800s and start chopping wood to heat your house and to get a bicycle nobody is stopping you. It’s a free market, buy and don’t buy what you want.
F.D.R. did nothing that was good for the economy in the Depression. He followed the word of Keynes (who was a horrible investor and wanted the deficit spending so he could get his money back he lost in the crash) and his defecit spending model which is has been proven to not work and we’re still dealing with the fallout from this fiscal policy to this day. It supposedly works out fine as long as the government can keep issuing bonds to cover the debt. The problem is that the liquidity of cash results in uncontrollable inflation - like we have now and will contnue to have until they start using Austrian (Hayek) economics through fiscal and monetary policy. F.D.R.’s programs were all shams with the exception of FDIC. Social Security? Give me a break. Look at the name for fuck sake. I did a model showing how much you pay in between you and your employer (or if you’re self-employed) to Social Security for if you’re making $20,000 a year, which is $3060. Compounding that by 6% for an average market return with a yearly input of an additional $3060 for 60 years gives you $1,830,196. Through Social Security that $3060 in 60 years gives you $183,600 - which you’re taxed on! If you had the freedom to invest that money the way you wish rather than through the Socialist Social Security program you could actually retire before you’re 105 years old. Through an IRA you wouldn’t be taxed on it and you could draw from it freely rather than getting your little $1000 a month which. Also, with SS if you die the Government wins and gets to keep your money. If people were free to do that the elderly wouldn’t have to try and drive up to Canada to buy their prescriptions because they can’t afford them.
As for Bush and his doings? I certainly don’t agree with everything he’s doing but I’m not totally against it either with the things that ‘try’ to keep us safe. The first thing I’d do if I were in control is legalize drugs though. People are going to get them and use them no matter what; at least if they were legal you could buy them in the gas station and it could be under some FDA scrutiny so it’s safer for people. I wouldn’t block Canadian drugs either, not because it’d be cheaper for people or anything like that, but because it’s against freedom. If it’s a subpar drug to the American drug people won’t buy. The free market (the consumer) will figure it out and people have the right to make the right and wrong decisions in their lives.
Copyright laws are an important things. Without copyright and patent laws there would be no reason for inventors or workers of property production to work because there would be no profits. Despite what the poor and Democratic party believe, ten percent of the people are not working so 90 percent don’t have to.
As for the stock market, I’ve been trading for years - you win some and you lose some. If you learn from your mistakes and never stop learning about economics and the entire picture you won’t lose your ass. The busines cycle is quite easy to game once you learn how - it’s not a shot in the dark. The problem for the average person is that they insist it’s gambeling and there is no way to win, yet these same people will buy Powerball tickets every week. In my experience the stock market is far from gambling. In fact, without it I’d be in trouble because my W-2 job doesn’t pay all that much.
Aaron, I agree on the power thing although I’m not going to fully agree that it has to do with money, but some are like that. See: Enron, Worldcom. I do believe a lot of people’s actions are controlled by their lust for power. Say a senator who decides to write a bill for something just so they can feel the power over the people. The people on the American Medical Association board who have a lock on the entire medical field in America making it so there are less doctors in the system just so they can guarantee a higher wage for the existing doctors. This power trip results in an inferior medical services product to we the consumers. Does that mean we should have socialized medicine? Hell no, just the opposite.

Here in the US a capitalistic culture if you get some money you get some power, but it doesn’t mean you are exempt from not getting into trouble. Yet in China (a socialistic based country) if you get some money and get some power, you are going to get away with it. If you see anyone with any little bit of power in China, you will see them bastards using it to their full extent like assholes. They will call people to meetings expecting these people to listen to them like they are Gods.

White Guy, man, don’t patronize me about the free market. I understand economic theory, man, I aced my econ class at a damn good college.
Now here’s what I’m saying: You’re right, no seller is forcing anyone to buy shit to heat their homes, food to eat, etc. But human conditions pretty much force people to buy that stuff. It’s a necessity or near necessity, and the demand is highly inelastic (meaning that when the price changes people still buy close to the same amount).
So, ok, in a competitive market a bunch of people selling necessities will compete to sell at the lowest price, so even though people would pay more because they’d need to, they don’t pay too much over cost. If you have a monopoly on a necessity, that’s much different: the people have a choice of paying whatever you charge or going without that product. That’s a harmful situation, not just for the people but the whole economy since the people have less money to spend. And this is what Darrow was talking about: even though Standard Oil actually lowered prices as they came up, once they got in a monopoly situation they fucked people over.
And dude, Exxon and the other companies are posting record profits, so don’t tell me they’re hurting. I assume you know a company’s not even supposed to make long-run profits in perfect competition, so they’re in a very advantageous market position, and don’t need any help.
Here’s another problem with capitalism, and again it’s connected to necessities. You can get to a situation where the combination of low wages and high rent, health care, food, and energy prices mean that people have a low quality of life for a lot of the population. You get enough people that are well-off, then the market won’t necessarily make these prices drop. So the economic inequality means that the lower-earning portion of your population is living in conditions that start affecting their ability to work, and even their willingness to work. So first you get people who have legitimate trouble finding employment, second you get people who decide to supplement their income with crime, or use crime rather than a legitimate job, third you get people who stay in an honest job but are miserable. A human in poverty is in a much different state than a human who’s well-off, but all economic people are considered equal. These social effects are unaccounted for in any macroeconomic model. What this means is that capitalism can fuck people over and the model doesn’t account for it.
So here’s the theory behind socialized capitalism, like we have in the U.S., in Scandanavia, most of Europe, etc.: you use market controls to try to make sure these human problems don’t occur, but allow free market as much as possible in the situation where the system’s working. This is how science works: you use one model for whatever parameters in which that model applies (most of the economy) but when the model starts breaking down, you use a new model for that portion of reality: when losing health care, housing, education causes fucked up things to happen to people, the main goal of that portion of the model is to provide those things. When certain things fuck up the environment in permanent, the main goal of that portion of the model is to make sure that doesn’t happen. Does socialism fail? Sure. Are a lot of hybrid systems oversocialized in some areas? Definitely. But capitalism also fails in a lot of areas. You have to understand that an internally perfect system like the free market only works when the rules of that system apply: and the free market system has some rules that are pretty fucking restrictive and exclude a lot of aspects of reality.
So here’s the bottom line: shit be fucked up, and there’s not one ideology that can deal with it, because all these ideologies tell you to look at the world in one way and that way ignores other parts of the world. So what this site is saying is don’t buy into that, and especially if you’re in a disadvantageous situation you gotta look out for yourself. That’s more applicable to everyday reality than anything Milton Friedman spits. But the reason I read this is because these dudes are clever and they come out and straight attack whatever bullshit is out there, and being in a school full of pretentious yuppies who believe in the greatness of all they do, it’s funny to see that shit just called out so directly.

Hey Rockfoot. Let me break it down to YOU right quick. If you go back to the day when Hip-Hop and Rap first started you’ll notice something different compared to now. First off there was a lot of talent, but the main thing is them niggas had something to say.
Then all of a sudden record companies started noticing what was getting popular. First the music, then the clothes and the mannerisms. So they dug down deep and took Hip Hop and Rap and whitenized it. Then next thing you know you got Jay Z going from havin something to say to big pimpin. You got some talentless bitch named 50 cent out there that is popular, and that is when you know Hip Hop and Rap lost it’s way. That is when it started makin people dumb and causing shit.
So lots go back to the 70’s and early 80’s. You had Metal bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. You had bands like Scorpians, Queensryche, and Fates Warning. These bands were powerful, full of talent, and most of them had something to say. Now you also had Rock bands like Vanhalen and others like them that were amazing and full of talent. Then all of a sudden this weird hairband thing popped up. Then all of a sudden they was singing about drugs, bitches and hoes….and they was makin whoever was listenin to it stupider…..Yet before the hair bands there was still talent, and the fucked up thing is every band that I named coming out of the 70’s and early 80’s..each one is still around making music, when most of the hair bands aren’t even around. Fuck even Bon Jovi isn’t doin the hair band thing anymore.
So you see Rockfoot, you gonna have your bands like Rush and Iron Maiden, but then you gonna have your bands like Poison and Cinderella. Which is the same for Hip Hop and Rap. You gonna have people like Grand Master Flash and Ice Cube, and then you gonna have people like 50 Cent and Chingy…which the sad thing is Justin Timberlake can rap better than the both of them.
